Sydney's annual Vivid Sydney festival is a mesmerizing celebration of light, music, ideas, and food. Held from May to June each year, Vivid transforms Sydney during the day and night through art, innovation and technology and is in its 15th year in 2025.

We visited Sydney's Vivid festival in June 2022 and made a weekend of visiting not only the Vivid attractions but the highlights of Sydney. We highly recommend that you add the Vivid Festival to your bucket list. But brace yourself for a city illuminated in awe-inspiring art installations that cast a magical glow upon the city's iconic buildings and spaces.

Planning Your Visit

To make the most of your Vivid Sydney experience:

  • Public transport: With road closures and limited parking, public transport is the most convenient way to navigate the city during the festival. Sydney's extensive network of trains, buses, ferries, and light rail services ensures easy access to all Vivid precincts.

  • Pre-book your accommodation: As Sydney can get busy at the best of times it may be worthwhile pre-booking your accommodation early to avoid disappointment. Consider staying in centrally located accommodations to fully immerse yourself in the festival's offerings and make it easy to get around. Proximity to major precincts allows for leisurely exploration and participation in evening events without the hassle of long commutes.

  • Festival schedule: Plan your visit during weekdays if you prefer a more relaxed experience, as weekends tend to attract larger crowds. Keep an eye on the official Vivid Sydney website for the latest updates on events, ticketing, and any changes to the program.

  • Get an Opal card (or use your credit card) for easy travel on public transport.

  • Pack layers—evenings during Vivid can get chilly!

Where to stay

We love the Sir Stamford at Circular Quay. It offers old-world charm as well being very centrally located.

What to expect

As night falls, Sydney's iconic landmarks come alive with captivating light installations and projections. The Vivid Sydney Light Walk is a free, immersive trail that winds through various precincts, each offering unique experiences.

Highlights of our experience with Vivid included:

  • Circular Quay & The Rocks: The transformation of the Sydney Opera House sails with stunning projections. This has to be the highlight of the event!

  • Darling Harbour: Transformed into a surreal dreamscape of interactive art and music, with waterfront installations that invite engagement and wonder.

  • Inner City Buildings: Urban spaces are transformed into open-air galleries, showcasing the talents of local and international artists.

Beyond the Lights

Vivid offers more than just visual spectacles:

  • Vivid Music: Attend exclusive concerts, free gigs, and late-night performances

  • Vivid Ideas: Engage with thought-provoking talks and workshops

  • Vivid Food: Indulge in a variety of dining experiences.

But check out the official website here to find out the different events and attractions and where they are located.

We booked a dinner night cruise, which allowed us to witness the spectacular lightshow from the water. You can book this cruise here.

Making the most of your trip to Sydney

Obviously there is so much more to do in Sydney, so even if you are here for a short time for the Vivid festival make sure you try and explore this wonderful city. For example, we visited:

  • Circular Quay: from our hotel on Circular Quay we started the day with views of the Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House.

  • Walk around the Opera House: If you like you can book a guided tour here.

  • Stroll through The Royal Botanic Garden: This is such an easy and enjoyable walk, with beautiful views and a great photo opportunity from Mrs Macquarie’s Chair.

  • Walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge

  • Catch a ferry to Manly

Visiting Sydney is a must but try to visit during Vivid as it offers a unique opportunity to experience the city in a new light, engaging with art, culture, and innovation on a grand scale. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a returning traveler, Sydney and the Vivid Festival promises memorable moments and inspiring encounters.
