Our family is a big fan of the movie 'The Polar Express' and every Christmas we enjoyed watching this movie together. So when we heard that there was a real Polar Express train journey in Williams, Arizona we couldn't wait to experience it for ourselves!
Williams is known as the “Gateway to the Grand Canyon,” but during the winter Christmas holiday season, it transforms into a winter wonderland, hosting one of the most enchanting and heartwarming train rides you’ll ever experience.
All Aboard!
The Polar Express Train Ride in Williams, inspired by the beloved children’s book The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg, offers a chance to relive the classic Christmas story in a truly immersive way. From the moment you step aboard the vintage, beautifully restored train, you are transported into the pages of the book.

The adventure begins at the historic Williams Train Depot near the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel. Everyone waits on the platform as the train chugs its way into the station. Most people are dressed up in their matching pajamas or Christmas outfits.
Once we boarded the train, we all felt like little kids on Christmas Eve as the excitement builds. Each cabin is decked out in beautiful Christmas decorations, and you can't help but notice the effort that has been taken to restore the old train to its former glory.
zona landscape, the magic starts to unfold.
The Journey - What to Expect?
Once onboard, expect to be greeted with favorite characters from the book – from the conductor to the cheerful chefs, all of whom are more than happy to spread some holiday cheer as they dance around and sing songs with the guests.
The Polar Express Train Ride is a journey through the iconic Christmas story. As the train chugs along the tracks, the story of The Polar Express is read aloud by the characters. Along the way, children and adults alike are encouraged to sing Christmas carols, enjoy hot cocoa, and share in the joy of the season. The Conductor comes along and clips your Golden Ticket and the waiters come around handing out hot chocolate and cookies.
The excitement reaches a peak when the train arrives at the 'North Pole'. Here, you’ll witness the grand moment where Santa Claus himself boards the train to greet all the passengers. He’ll take time to personally hand out a special gift—a shiny silver bell, just like the one in the book.
Then the train goes back towards Williams and everyone is a little sleepy after the hot chocolate but the singing of Christmas carols continues.

One of the most remarkable parts of the Polar Express experience is the festive atmosphere. The staff are friendly and engage with passengers in such a way that it feels as if you're part of the magic. We would highly recommend this experience for the whole family - there is something special about The Polar Express and the magic of Christmas that it inspires.
