Nestled on the southeastern coast of Bulgaria, the Burgas region is known for its breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and historical landmarks. But among its many treasures, one of the most magical and lesser-known natural wonders is the Burgas Pink Salt Pools. We explored these pools in 2019. Enjoying these pools with the locals offered a unique and rejuvenating experience off the beaten path.
The Burgas Pink Salt Pools are located near the town of Burgas, along the Black Sea coast. The Burgas Salt Pools are worth seeing for their bright pink colour alone, but it is the health benefits that people come here for.
This natural spa experience has three stages; first floating in the pink salt water, then covering yourself in healing mud and finally washing the mud off in the Black Sea, located 50 meters from the pools.

The pools derive their distinctive pink hue from the high concentration of algae, specifically Dunaliella salina, which thrive in the salty water. This algae, a microscopic organism, produces a red pigment when exposed to high salt concentrations and intense sunlight, creating an otherworldly sight that is both visually stunning and incredibly photogenic.
The pink water is silky to the touch and full of large salt crystals. Floating in the salt water is one of the strangest experiences, as you struggle to put your feet down and end up bobbing around and revolving on the surface.
Getting to the Burgas Pink Salt Pools
Visiting the Burgas Pink Salt Pools is relatively easy, as the site is only about 15 minutes from the city of Burgas. The most straightforward way to get there is by car with parking close by.
When to Visit
The best time to visit the Burgas Pink Salt Pools is during the summer months, from late May to early September, when the algae are in full bloom and the salt pools are at their most vibrant. However, the surrounding area is also beautiful year-round, with the spring and autumn months offering a quieter, more peaceful experience. In winter, the salt pools might be less colorful, but the crisp air and serene environment offer a different kind of charm.
Salt water bathing and mud pools may not be to everyone’s taste, but if you do try it, it is an experience you will not forget and genuinely make you feel rejuvenated all over.
